success

professional designation – the Chartered Professional Accountant or CPA. The discussions began last May and
leadership from both organizations are assessing the member response and deciding on the next steps in the
process.
Kara Mitchelmore will update the status of the discussions.
Workshop #2: Cross-cultural Communication
1:15 p.m. – 4 p.m.
(with a refreshment break)
Description:
Why isn’t he looking directly at me? Should I shake his hand? He doesn’t speak to me when spoken to-
how rude! Cultural misperceptions are often at the root of misunderstandings in the workplace and abroad.
One-fifth of Canada’s population was born from outside of Canada, making that population one of the fastest
growing niche markets today. Understanding cultural differences creates an awareness that allows individuals
to perform their job in a more meaningful, impactful, effective and profitable way. With diversity growing in
Alberta, cross-cultural communication is integral to effective business practices.
What you’ll learn:
• When do you shake someone’s hand?
• Should you look someone in the eye?
• Is a certain colour of suit offensive?
• Should I talk about the weather?
This thought-provoking, energetic, engaging and sometimes humorous session answers these questions and
more, utilizing role-playing, exercises and case studies taken from real-life work scenarios.
Facilitator: Tina Varughese, B.A., B.Comm.
Varughese has worked primarily with immigrants for the past 11 years in Calgary. Currently, she is
the president of tWorks - a Calgary-based company specializing in multicultural marketing seminars, cultural
diversity, relocation and settlement. Prior to tWorks, Varughese worked with Alberta Employment, Immigration
