CMA Fundamentals Program

Program Introduction
The CMA Fundamentals Program consists of two online courses that provide comprehensive coverage of the Introductory Financial Accounting and Management Accounting prerequisites required for the CMA Accelerated Program. To be eligible for the CMA Accelerated Program, students must have successfully completed these two courses, along with a minimum grade of 60 per cent in economics and statistics, and must also have a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution.

By registering for the CMA Fundamentals Program, students will receive:

  • textbooks covering the required material;
  • access to the Lyryx website, where students will complete chapter quizzes; and
  • lesson notes outlining the objectives of each chapter and solutions to textbook problems.

Note: the primary purpose of the CMA Fundamentals Program is to assist students in obtaining the introductory accounting prerequisites required for the CMA Accelerated Program. These courses are not transferable to other post-secondary institutions.

Program Overview

Introductory Financial Accounting
This course is an integrated introduction to accounting principles and practices. Accounting is often called the "language of business." The course is designed to help students understand and communicate in this language – something that is important for users of accounting information, not just for those that prepare it. The course should also help students gain an appreciation for the uses of accounting information and the limitations inherent in accounting.

Prerequisites: Proficiency in English and a university degree or equivalent are required.

Introductory Management Accounting
This course examines how accounting information is used within organizations to plan, monitor and control. Managers in all functional areas, whether they like it or not, will have to deal with the management accounting system of the organization they work for. The purpose of this course is to ensure students have a basic understanding of how such systems operate, the language it uses and its limitations.

Prerequisites: Proficiency in English and a university degree or equivalent are required.

Evaluation
Evaluation for each course is based on:

  • Online chapter quizzes - 40 per cent of the final grade; and
  • A comprehensive, three hour final exam to be scheduled by the student with their proctor - 60 per cent of the final grade

A pass mark of 60 per cent is required to successfully complete the course.

Note: The course must be completed within six months of registration. Students who do not meet the minimum grade requirement of 60 per cent will not be permitted to enter into the CMA Accelerated Program.

The CMA Fundamentals Program is a rigorous program offered through distance learning only. Students who enter the program must be highly disciplined and must be committed to the work plans outlined in the lesson notes provided with the program.
