University of Waterloo CMA Program of study for
public accounting
Overview
The University of Waterloo is pleased to offer courses for Certified Management Accountants seeking
additional training in the area of Auditing Practice and Federal Income Taxation. These non-credit courses
are offered in partnership with the Society of Management Accountants of Canada. These courses are designed
to prepare CMAs to take and pass certification exams so that they become able to practice public accounting
in their home province.
CMA Tax I, II and III courses
The Taxation material is divided into 3 courses – Taxation I, Taxation II, and Taxation III. Each course is 9
weeks in length, plus two assessment components – a midterm and a final exam, and builds on the competencies
acquired through the prior course. While the time required to complete each week may vary, the expected time
commitment is 10 hours per week.
For Taxation I, II, and III the website will facilitate candidate learning though directed readings and the completion of group assignments. These groups will be composed of 3-4 individuals and candidates will have access to a group forum hosted on the course web site in order to assist groups who are geographically dispersed.
CMA Audit I and II courses
A two-part course series, CMA Audit I & II is designed to prepare CMAs to take and pass the
Ontario Public Accountants Council’s licensure exam. Students develop their understanding of current
practical auditing, with awareness of current research and the current business environment.
For Audit I and II, detailed PowerPoint lessons support the readings and are narrated by the instructor of the class. The lessons are available on-line and on DVD.
Additionally on-line discussion boards will facilitate learning and provide candidates access to the instructor and other classmates.
Course details:
Each course is 12 weeks long. You proceed through each module at your own pace; however, you must
complete the entire course within 12 weeks and be available to write exams on required dates. While the time
required to complete each module may vary significantly, the expected time commitment for each of the 12
modules is 2-3 hours.
Each course has a mid-term and an exam, arranged at locations across the country by the Society of Management Accountants of Canada.
These online courses are provided using the University of Waterloo's online learning environment. Check the minimum system specifications before registering.
